Description
Responsible for identifying and prioritizing the educational and professional development needs of Patient Care Services staff; acts as a role model and mentor, designing and developing clinical educational programs, including KPHC training, clinical specialty training, new graduate/hire training, and continuing education for staff. Ensures clinical education is integrated with KPHC. Coordinates nursing competence and professional development programs for Patient Care Service.
Essential Functions:
• Coordinates nursing competence & professional development programs for Patient Care Services.
• Responsible for identifying and prioritizing the educational and professional development needs (including KPHC educational needs) of clinical staff; acting as a role model and mentor, designing and developing clinical educational programs, including specialty training, new graduate/hire training and continuing education for staff.
• Collaborates with Patient Care Services leadership team to develop/maintain an infrastructure to ensure that staff is competent to perform their jobs.
• Advocates use of KPHC and incorporates KPHC education into development programs.
• Provides consultation in areas of clinical expertise, and provides clinical leadership.
• Works across Service Area to ensure that competencies meet professional standards and planning of programs is efficient across specialties/job categories.
• Partners with leadership and management teams to meet the strategic organizational goals related to maintaining a competent, qualified professional work force.
• Assesses professional and clinical development/education needs of nursing staff, based on standards of care.
• Collaborates with leadership, management teams and clinical educators in the Service Area to identify education/development needs of nursing staff so that programs can be designed/coordinated and implemented efficiently.
• In collaboration with clinical educators, ensures curriculum integrity and course content consistency across the Service Area.
• Coordinates, reviews and evaluates education programs to ensure compliance with the Continuing Education requirements of the Board of Registered Nursing.
• Acts as a role model for professional care in area of clinical specialty.
• Manages staff including hiring, terminations and corrective action.
• Develops and implements action plans to improve staff development and ensures goals are met.
• Provides staff with information of current clinical practice, and ensures that policies/standards and practice meets regulatory requirements related to competence.
• Utilizes multiple educational strategies, media and partners to provide/deliver educational programs, including colleges and universities.
• Utilizes research to improve care; provides consultation in areas of clinical expertise and provides leadership in department and in the facility related to clinical expertise.
• Assures that education/development programs/classes meet budget guidelines.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
• 5 years experience coordinating or managing education program /curriculum design, development and evaluation/assessment, including 2 years in staff professional development and/or clinical training/teaching.
• BSN or BS or equivalent experience in health care or related field required
• Masters degree in nursing, education or other closely related field.
• Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
• Current California RN license required.
• BLS certificate required.
• Demonstrated knowledge of medical center policy and procedure requirements, specialty training and competency requirements.
• Knowledge of Nurse Practice Act, federal, state, and local requirements.
• Demonstrated knowledge in KP HealthConnect including functionality and expertise in workflows (or for external hires, similarly integrated medical record).
• Demonstrated knowledge in performance improvement practices.
