POSITION PURPOSE
The purpose of this position is to deliver best in class federal tax accounting and reporting services in terms of quality, timeliness and cost efficiency as a member of the Tax Accounting and Reporting Center of Excellence (“COE”).CUSTOMERS AND CUSTOMER EXPECTATIONS
Key customers include the Vice President - Taxes, Director - Tax Accounting and Reporting, Tax Manager - State and Local, Manger – Tax Accounting, Director - International Tax Analysis, Director – Tax Defense, corporate officers, staff personnel, the Internal Revenue Service, the Canada Revenue Agency, provincial tax authorities, and others concerned with tax matters inside and outside the Corporation. The Vice President - Taxes and Director - Tax Accounting and Reporting expect the accurate and timely filing of all federal tax forms, statements and elections; and the identification, resolution, and documentation of tax accounting matters for the Corporation and all of its North American subsidiaries.The Tax Accounting and Reporting COE expects the effective management and coordination of external service providers to timely and accurately complete the Canadian tax reporting, and the timely and accurate completion of the Canadian tax accounting requirements. The Tax Defense and Advocacy COE expects standardized and adequately documented Canadian tax filing positions and the proper reflection of audit adjustments in current Canadian tax reporting filings. The Tax Consulting COE expects timely and accurate Canadian tax reporting information as a basis for analysis of potential tax initiatives, to identify opportunities in Canadian and federal income tax to increase the Corporation’s net earnings before tax and/or reduce the Corporation’s effective tax rate, and to monitor and maintain executed federal planning initiatives through annual reporting of initiative results against expectations. Finally, the Canadian Revenue Agency expects timely, accurate and well documented tax filings.SCOPE
This position reports directly to the Director - Tax Accounting and Reporting. The Tax Department is organized into four COEs -- Tax Accounting and Reporting, Tax Defense and Advocacy, Tax Consulting, and International Taxes. Each COE is responsible for specifically aligned tax processes. The Tax Accounting and Reporting COE is further organized along three major functions: Federal Tax Reporting, State and Local Tax Reporting, and Tax Accounting, each headed by a manager.This position requires extensive knowledge of US Federal tax law, tax accounting concepts and their application, strong project management skills, while knowledge of Canadian tax laws, regulations and reporting requirements would be beneficial. The incumbent will have responsibility for managing external service providers to ensure the Canadian income tax requirements are timely, accurate and efficiently satisfied. This position will be responsible for ensuring alignment between the Canadian taxable income calculations used for compliance and provision processes. The incumbent will also be responsible for developing continuous improvements in tax reporting and accounting efficiency. The incumbent will also be a significant resource in assisting other Tax Accounting and Reporting COE functions during rolling work load peaks. QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
The incumbent must have extensive tax research and analytical skills, extensive knowledge of legal and accounting aspects of tax matters, and extensive knowledge of the Corporation. The incumbent must have seven to ten years of broad-based tax reporting experience with a large multinational corporation or national or regional public accounting firm. A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required. A CPA or CMA certification would be a significant asset to the individual in this position as would an MBA, Masters’ in Taxation or a J.D. degree.The incumbent must have substantial subject matter expertise in various technical areas of the federal tax laws. The incumbent should also possess extensive knowledge of the Corporation and its accounting records, procedures and systems.The ability to work with teams of professionals in a fast-paced, multi tasking environment under strict time parameters and the ability to communicate technical information to a varied audience are critical skills for this position. The incumbent must possess strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within the Corporation and to relate successfully with outside counsel, accounting firms, and governmental authorities. Strong project management, communication, and analytical skills are imperative.PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Manage the accurate and timely completion of all assigned Canadian tax reporting processes, including responsibility for managing the completion of all Canadian reporting requirements for the Corporation’s Canadian operations. Coordinate and/or prepare assigned areas of the Corporation’s US tax returns to ensure accurate, timely compliance thereby minimizing the Corporation’s tax liabilities while avoiding interest and penalties.
2. Obtain, analyze, and report credible and accurate information from our Canadian and international operations and automate and standardize the information gathering and documentation process so as to efficiently meet extensive tax reporting and accounting deadlines. Develop continuous improvements in tax reporting and accounting efficiency. Provide opportunities to improve operating profit and/or reduce the Corporation’s effective tax rate.
3. Assist the International Tax Analysis function with U.S. federal reporting responsibilities related to the Corporation’s Canadian affiliates.
4. As requested, analyze tax liability and expense accounts timely, accurately and efficiently; recommend appropriate adjustments to those accounts; provide data in support of and for inclusion in reports as requested by any of the aforementioned customers; and provide tax advisory expertise to personnel at the Corporation’s locations in the taxing jurisdictions assigned to the incumbent.
5. Leverage technology to increase efficiencies. The Corporation’s tax processes will be improved by being proactive and skills leveraged within and across COEs to standardize processes, increase efficiencies, and assist in meeting Department objectives.
6. Maintain a personal Training Development Plan to ensure continuous improvement of professional skills. This requires semi-annual professional development meetings and adherence to the personal Plan agreed upon in those meetings. Expand educational scope through involvement with tax professional organizations and service provider networking opportunities.
7. Maintain a proficiency in desktop computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and a working knowledge of CORPTax, Global Integrator and SAP.
8. Perform tax research and develop, recommend, and implement tax plans that (i) reduce Canadian or domestic affiliates’ effective tax rates or (ii) support the development of opportunities to reduce the overall tax on earnings, with proper consideration of business plans and risk factors.
9. Assist the Tax Team in special projects, as requested by the Director – Tax Accounting and Reporting. Special projects may include, but are not limited to, development of systems or procedures to improve the efficiency of the Tax Team or support World-Class Finance initiatives.
10. Communicate within and across COEs. Communicate fully in a timely, informative, and accurate manner with superiors and others who have a need to know. Maintain excellent oral, written and presentation skills. Provide exceptional customer service throughout the Corporation.
11. Conduct all activities in a safe manner and maintain safety in the general work environment.
